Rules

For Picking Next Book

  1. When the current book is completed, the book previously marked as "Next" becomes the current book. The book just finished is removed from the list.
  2. The new "next" book must be in the same Fiction/Non-Fiction category as the book just completed unless there are no books that would qualify.
  3. If a non-fiction book, the next book must not be in the same Personal/Work category as the last non-fiction book completed, unless there are no books that would qualify
  4. Within each category, if I have a further New vs Continuing Series classification, I randomly select between those classifications with equal weight. (Added 2014-08-16)
  5. Within the category now selected, use random.org to generate a random number from 1 to the current number of books in the category.
    1. If the book is one I already own (and have handy) a physical copy of, this is the new "next" book, mark it appropriately and we are done.
    2. If this title is available on Kindle, this is the new "next" book, mark it appropriately and purchase the Kindle edition of the book. We are done.
    3. If not available on Kindle, add a sub-bullet indicating the date and that the book was not available on Kindle. (A note of this type can only be added once per book selection. If the title rolled already has such a note, simply roll again. If *all* titles in a category have a note for the current cycle, then on the next roll the title picked will be treated as if it already has five notes, even if it doesn't.)
    4. If there are now five or more such sub-bullets, then check physical availability of the book
      1. If the book is available physically (for a reasonable price) order it from Amazon and mark the book as the next book. We are done.
    5. If at this point no book has been marked as next, select another random number at random.org and repeat

For Adding to the List

  • Basically, whenever I hear of a book I might want to read or if someone gives me a book, add it to the list in the appropriate category
    • If the book is a sequel, or otherwise in a series where I have not read earlier books in the series, put the new book in the "pending" category and put the first book in the series I have not already read into the regular section of the list.
  • If a book is completed that has sequels or is part of a series, then if I liked the book, add the next book in the series to the list
  • Whenever a book in a series is added to the list, include a link to a listing of the whole series
  • If the shelf I keep unread physical books has room on it, and I find old physical books of mine in boxes or elsewhere, add enough to fill the shelf.
  • New rule added 2012-08-12: Books that are gifts are listed 10 times, to give them a higher chance of getting picked than books that are simply on my wishlist. May consider expanding this to legacy physical books on list in future.
